ReEdit: Giving a Voice to Idiots (via UnaRocks)
came across this five page pull-out in this weeks HotPress and it is really worth a read. It’s a piece on a Limerick rapper called “Nailerz” and to say that his output is truly awful could not even begin to describe the dross he calls music. It’s a drastic shame that he goes on to commit the biggest crime in music which is to be boring, and something as engaging as music should never be boring.
To be fair to HotPress, I’ve never been much of a fan of the magazine for the simple reason that they don’t speak to me. They’re musical loves that they (and other publications) promote and encourage say nothing to me about my life and my experiences and as such the connection has never been there.
However, the sheer presense and pimping of Nailerz crosses the line into musical and subcultural absurdity – if HotPress really want to promote hip-hop to an Irish public, whose only knowledge of the genre is the bullshit as witnessed on television, then why not interview artists, promoters (etc…) that are good at it!!
The arrogant theory that you need a gun or a knife in hip-hop is sensationalist drivel from those obsessed with an image painted in ghetto blood – packaged and imported by MTV and Sky News. It reminds me of when Gareth Brooks was starting out – he was not accepted by the country music fraternity until he put on a cowboy hat (true story). Polar opposites indeed, but it stands up…
Anyhoo, to show how tough he is, there are photographs of him holding a shotgun, just because… even though he has stated that “he doesn’t like shooting people”, however he also states that “stabbing people in the arse is funny because of when they try to sit down”.
If for some deluded reason, you want to hear some stuff, his Bebo music site is here, but beware I listened to the first couple of minutes of the first track after which I… just… couldn’t…
Current listening:
Thanks to Nailerz, I permanently deaf!!
