Two Enemies for the Price of One

without comments

Hi everybody,

I’ve been meaning to post this up for the last few days, but have been well busy recently. However I feel the need to ask the question; “what is it with award ceremonies of late (bar the Choice Awards)?” Also, what is it with me having a go at award ceremonies in general (you can answer that one yourselves…)?

There is something about the NME (New Musical Express for those of you who read it in the 1970’s/early 80’s – something that doesn’t quite ring true anymore) that makes me wonder “why..?” The Meteor Awards is a bad example of industry back-slapping, but nothing compares to the insider camaraderie of the NME. The self congratulatory nature of the shenanigan’s exposed the very worst of the music industry in Britain at the moment, but worse than that are the compilation of non-awards at the ceremony.

Do I give a shit if they award George W Bush with “Villain of the Year”? Little things like that actually make me question the intelligence of the voters – it’s like populist shooting fish in a barrel, where conscientious folk get together and agree that 2 + 2 is indeed 4!!
The oft polarised relationship that readers have with the magazine was perfectly summed up by My Chemical Romance getting nominated for Best International Band and Worst Band amongst other things. In my mind, My Chemical Romance are neither the best nor the worst band, but a pale imitation of other acts in that genre.

Other awards in the ceremony included Best TV Show (won by the piss-poor Mighty Boosh Season Three), Best Album (Klaxon’s “Myths of the Near Future” – good singles, poor overall album), Best British Band (Arctic Monkeys – good band, but not best), Best New Band (The Enemy), Best Solo Artist (Kate Nash – I like Kate Nash, but she’s not the best), as well as a whole shitload of others. I couldn’t less about Worse Dressed Awards or Favourite Website – how could anyone give a shit?
Hands up all you NME readers that think otherwise and explain it to me!! There shall be another rant later on.

Current listening:
Scott Joplin “Various Ragtime Themes”

Etc, etc, etc…
